Help Bring Comics into the Classroom

Reading with Pictures is an educational non-profit organization that promotes literacy and the visual arts through the use of comics in the classroom. To achieve our goals, we’ve recently launched a pledge drive on kickstarter.com (http://kck.st/a2LVJy) to finance the publication of a groundbreaking educational comics anthology. The anthology features a cover by Jill Thompson (The Sandman) and original stories by over 50 all-ages creators including Fred Van Lente (Amazing Spider-Man), Chris Giarrusso (Mini-Marvels), Jim Gownley (Amelia Rules), Jeffrey Brown (Sulk), Scott Sava (The Dreamland Chronicles), and RWP Executive Director Josh Elder (Mail Order Ninja). This limited edition anthology will serve as a proof of concept that comics can be both entertaining and educational, and the only way to guarantee that you get your copy is by pre-ordering on Kickstarter today!

Learn more by visiting us online at www.readingwithpictures.org.

At Reading with Pictures, we’re getting comics into schools and getting schools into comics.

Awesome, or what? Others involved include Eric Wight (Frankie Pickle), Raina Telgemeier (Babysitter's Club, Smile) and Fred Van Lente (Action Philosophers, Marvel Zombies). What?! I know, right?

FCHS at MoCCA?

Working on putting together an FCHS mini for MoCCA. It'll be the 8 pgs of prequel stuff I posted previously, plus some new stuff... Here's FCHS meets The Breakfast Club!

Mini for MoCCA: Dental Hygiene and Secret Identities!

It's been forever, but I come bearing gifts.

BIG NEWS! I'm happy to say this year at MoCCA you can look out for Dental Hygiene and Secret Identities, a mini by between me and Eric Skillman! It's a silent 8 pg comics about a little boy and his cape, a dentist, with a great punchline. Here's a couple of pages from it.

Many thanks to him for choosing me to work on this super fun comic, and for featuring me on his Geekweek's Your New Favorite! Rad.

Be sure to check out his blog, Cozy Lummox.

More BIG NEWS! I've had the awesome pleasure to work with Vito Delsante and Andrew Dimitt on a 6 pager for Image Comics' Twisted Savage Dragon Funnies! Crazy thanks to Michel Fiffe and of course, Erik Larson. Starting with Savage Dragon #160 in May, the lineup goes something like this:

160 (May, ‘10). Michel Fiffe
161 (June). Andrew Dimitt
162 (July). Kiel West
163 (Aug). Delsante & Freire(!!)
164 (Sept). Ulises Farinas
165 (Oct). Chris Sinderson
166 (Nov). Conor Hughes
167 (Dec). Kat Roberts
168 (Jan, '11). Hyeondo Park
169 (Feb). Pedro Camargo
170 (Mar). Jason Thibodeaux
171 (April). Special Guests Galore!

Oh yeah, AND they're flip books. CAUTION: Read these only if you like having your socks rocked off.

GULP! Issue 1 Hits Stands Hard!

A 50 page horror anthology featuring 10 stories and 9 pin ups by Anthony Stock, Alex Karassavidis, Kevin Kusulas, Alphonso Ortiz, Jose Luis Guzman and yours truly with a cover by Julie Ly for only $6? Rad! Sure, there's a small Kevin's name is misspelled once, but whatevvs. That just makes it a limited one of only 50 first printing!!

A King Con '09 premiere! Check it:

KING CON

So I'll be at King Con - Brooklyn's first ever comic convention! - this weekend with my good pal Alex Karassavidis! Visit his website here.

That's Nov 7&8, Saturday and Sunday. Here is a link to their site, it looks like it's gonna be awesome! Admission is only $7 per day and $10 for the whole weekend, it seems. Not bad! As soon as I find out what our table is, I'll post it.

Also please note I've changed this blog's address because there was some confusion with my middle initial in there. Now it's just plain ol' rachelfreire.blogspot.com. Just keeping you guys in the know! Thanks everyone who's watching me, please continue to do so!

FCHS - Update + Pgs 4-8

So, there's been a small setback. FCHS has been canceled due to low pre-order numbers. While we won't be published by AdHouse anymore, we also won't give up now. You haven't seen the last of us!

Here's the rest of the FCHS 8-Page prequel, reading bottom up to keep in line with previous posts. Thanks for reading!
